HC Deb 10 December 1985 vol 88 c611W
Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how he arrived at the total of £150 million anticipated to be saved by cost improvement programmes in the National Health Service in 1985–86 mentioned in his National Health Service annual report 1985.

Mr. Hayhoe

As my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services told the House on 22 April at columns 629–30, regional health authorities' plans for 1985–86 included proposals for cost improvement totalling £150 million. These proposals are the basis of the figures quoted on page 2 of the National Health Service annual report 1985.

Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received from health authorities about the scope for savings from cost improvement programmes in 1985–86 compared with 1984–85.

Mr. Hayhoe

Regional health authorities themselves put forward proposals for cost improvement totalling £150 million, compared with the £100 million proposed for and achieved in 1984–85, in their short-term programmes for 1985–86, which were approved in April.
