HC Deb 10 December 1985 vol 88 c601W
40. Dr. Mawhinney

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, on average, how many National Health Service hospital beds are unoccupied on each day of the week.

Mr. Whitney

In 1984, the latest year for which information is available centrally, there was a daily average of 65,188 beds recorded as being available but not occupied in National Health Service hospitals in England. Bed occupancy figures are based on a midnight count and do not therefore reflect the use of beds by patients who do not stay overnight.
