HC Deb 10 December 1985 vol 88 c609W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has as to the extent of corneal damage or destruction caused by soft contact lenses.

Mr. Hayhoe

I understand from evidence from the United States of America that some soft contact lenses for extended wear can cause corneal ulcers. However, there is as yet insufficient information on this problem to determine its prevalence in the United Kingdom. I have extended the yellow card system for reporting adverse reactions on a pilot basis to include ophthalmic opticians so that if corneal ulcers are found the Department would be told, and I have arranged for consultant ophthalmologists to be reminded to use the existing yellow card system for this purpose. I am considering the provision of funds for research into the relationship between corneal ulceration and contact lens wear. I am also arranging with the manufacturers the provision of adequate written instructions to all wearers of contact lenses.
