HL Deb 09 December 1985 vol 469 c98WA
Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will increase the resources available to the NHS to provide proper levels of staff and facilities both in and outpatient, to care for the rapidly-growing number of AIDS sufferers; and

Whether, bearing in mind that the number of AIDS sufferers is likely to be around 7,500 by 1988 and that the cost of nursing each patient is estimated at around £20,000, the £1,000,000 extra funds announced recently for the treatment of the disease was only the first instalment of the extra allocation of funds that will be needed to treat the disease.

Baroness Trumpington

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for Social Services announced on 2nd December that the Government are providing an additional £6.3 million for health and preventive services on AIDS. This is in addition to the £1.8 million of extra Government money for AIDS announced earlier this year. The money just announced includes £2.5 million towards the treatment costs next year in the three Thames Regional Health Authorities treating the majority of United Kingdom AIDS cases.
