Dr. McDonald

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the chief constable as to the number of new investigations started by the City of London police company fraud squad for each year since 1979; how many of those investigations have been completed since 1979; how many of these investigations have led to prosecutions; and how many of these investigations have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

[pursuant to his reply, 2 December 1985, c. 29I understand from the Commissioner of Police for the City of London that from 1 January 1979 to 31 October 1985, 450 fraud investigations were commenced; of these 321 cases have been completed, 112 cases have resulted in prosecutions, and 133 cases have been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

[pursuant to his reply, 2 December 1985, c. 29I understand from the Commissioner of Police for the City of London that from 1 January 1979 and to 31 October 1985, 110 cases were referred to the Department of Trade and Industry or the City solicitor or both, and of these 78 cases have been completed, resulting in 47 prosecutions.
