HC Deb 04 December 1985 vol 88 c244W
Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what effect the agreement between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics over communications in the north Pacific will have on British airlines; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Spicer

The agreement between the USA, Japan and the USSR was signed on 19 November 1985 and provides for new communication links between Anchorage, Tokyo and Khabarovsk when civil aircraft are in trouble on north Pacfic air routes, and for the use of a radio broadcasting station on Kamchatka as a navigation aid.

The agreement should help to reduce the danger of repetition of the incident involving the shooting down of a Korean airliner and will benefit the aircraft of all nations flying on north Pacific routes.
