HL Deb 04 December 1985 vol 468 cc1400-1WA
Viscount Hanworth

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they propose to take to prevent abuse of our public inquiry procedures.

Lord Elton

There is no evidence of any general abuse of public inquiry procedures, but there is a continuing need to ensure that inquiries are conducted not only fairly and impartially but also speedily and efficiently. Inspectors are receiving training in aspects of holding inquiries, and it is proposed to strengthen their powers, particularly in relation to irrelevant or repetitious material and disruptive behaviour. Measures are also being taken to improve the exchange of information before the inquiry opens.
