Mr. Marlow

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table showing for each year since 1965 the weekly value at 1985 prices of child tax allowance and child benefit.

Mr. Moore

The table below gives the weekly value of child support to families paying tax at the basic rate. Child support covers child tax allowances, family allowances and child benefit. Values are expressed at November 1984 prices, since the general index of retail prices for the 12 months to November 1985 is not yet available. The weekly value shown for November 1985 at November 1984 prices is therefore provisional.

¶Provisional. The November 1985 rate of child benefit (£7.00) has been expressed at November 1984 prices using an assumption of an increase in the General Index of Retail Prices of 5 1/2 per cent. over the 12 month period, consistent with the forecast of the annual rate of inflation for the fourth quarter of 1985, published in the autumn statement.
