HC Deb 04 December 1985 vol 88 cc262-3W
42. Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he has taken to evaluate the impact of the Canary wharf development in the London enterprise zone on the social and economic life of east London and its strategic significance for Greater London.

Sir George Young

None, but the London Docklands Development Corporation is currently considering the economic and social implications of the scheme.

54. Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what assessment he has made of the claims of the sponsors of the Canary wharf project in respect of the number of jobs which the project will create; and how many of these jobs are likely to go to local people.

Sir George Young

My right hon. Friend has made no such assessment, but the London Docklands Development Corporation is currently examining the employment implications of the scheme with the prospective developers.

Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what are the costs and results of any feasibility studies by the London Docklands Development Corporation for the development of Canary wharf.

Sir George Young

The London Docklands Development Corporation has allocated £300,000 for a range of feasibility studies into proposals for the development of Canary wharf. It is not yet possible, however, to estimate the total cost of this work because the contribution of the interested bodies with whom the corporation is having discussions may expand the scope of these studies.
