Mr. Trippier

I refer my hon. Friend to my reply on 27 November, at column 594, to the hon. Member for Workington (Mr. Campbell-Savours).

75. Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Paymaster General what has been the net increase in the number of new businesses since 1980.

Mr. Trippier

The net increase in the number of businesses between 1980 and 1984 is estimated to have been of the order of 140,000. Detailed figures were published in an article in the 23 August 1985 edition ofBritish Business, a copy of which is in the Library. As the article explains, the estimate is subject to revision as more information is received.
