HC Deb 03 December 1985 vol 88 c165W
25. Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Prime Minister what is Her Majesty's Government's estimate of unemployed people who are actively seeking work; and what assumptions are made in calculating that figure as to the number of people classified as unemployed who are not registered at job centres.

The Lord Privy Seal

I have been asked to reply.

According to the labour force survey, there were an estimated 2,905,000 people without jobs and actively seeking work in Great Britain in the spring of 1984. This figure is derived from household interviews and no assumption is made of the numbers of people claiming benefits or registered at jobcentres.
