HC Deb 02 December 1985 vol 88 c3W
Mr. Lester

asked the Prime Minister what are the implications for the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards United Kingdom membership of UNESCO of her agreement to the Nassau declaration of world order.

The Prime Minister

Our decision to withdraw from membership of UNESCO, unless major reforms are secured, is entirely consistent with our commitment under the Nassau declaration to play a full part in revitalising international co-operation for development.

Mr. Lester

asked the Prime Minister if she will list by major programme the changes sought by Her Majesty's Government in UNESCO's programme and the extent to which each objective was met at the Sofia congress; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The Government are still considering the outcome of the UNESCO conference in Sofia.
