HC Deb 02 December 1985 vol 88 cc6-7W
Mr. Dixon

asked the Secretary of State for Energy when he will respond to representations made by the hon. Member for Jarrow concerning the benefit entitlements of National Coal Board employees who became redundant after 1 January 1986; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Hunt

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy has made it clear that no decisions have yet been made about the details of any scheme to succeed the current redundant mineworkers' payments scheme. As my right hon. Friend advised the House on 25 November, a statement will be made as soon as conclusions have been reached.

Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many persons were made redundant from collieries and other National Coal Board owned industries, prior to their eventual closure, in the 12 months prior to the implementation of the redundant mineworkers scheme order.

Mr. David Hunt

The present redundant mineworkers payments scheme was introduced in The Redundant Mineworkers and Concessionary Coal (Payments Schemes) Order 1984, which came into operation on 1 April 1984. During the preceeding financial year 1983–84 some 20,400 men left the coal industry on RMPS terms.

Mr. Mason

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he is now able to reveal a framework of legislation which is designed to assist those coalminers who may lose the redundant mineworkers scheme benefits as a result of their 12-month long strike; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Hunt

I have made it clear that no decisions have yet been made about the details of any scheme to succeed the current redundant mineworkers' payments scheme. As I advised the right hon. Member during oral answers on 25 November, I will make a statement as soon as conclusions have been reached.
