Mr. Soley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police districts in the Metropolitan police area are operating as if the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the codes of practice are in force; and on what dates they started operating in this manner.

Mr. Giles Shaw

The Metropolitan police have introduced those provisions of the 1984 Act and the codes of practice which do not require statutory powers on the basis of trial runs. These were brought into operation in all Metropolitan police districts on 1 April 1985 in resepct of stop and search and road check powers, on 1 May 1985 in respect of the searching of premises, and on 1 July 1985 in respect of the detention, treatment, and questioning of persons by police officers.
