asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the maternity bed provision by each health board in Scotland expressed as a percentage of the population served by each board.

The latest comprehensive data available relate to the average number of staffed beds in the year to 31 March 1984. These are expressed below in terms of the number per 10,000 resident population: in some cases individual maternity units also serve patients from neighbouring boards.

None. This is a matter for each health board to determine in the light of local circumstances.

None. The provision of maternity services is a matter for health boards in the first instance although specific proposals for major capital developments require the approval of the Scottish Home and Health Department when such matters may be discussed.
