HC Deb 02 December 1985 vol 88 cc86-7W
Mr. Hickmet

asked the Paymaster General (1) what the unemployment figures and percentages were for the Glanford and Scunthorpe constituency in September 1983, September 1984 and September 1985, respectively;

(2) if he will give the percentage by which unemployment in the Glanford and Scunthorpe constituency has been reduced since June 1983;

(3) what trend the unemployment figures from September 1983 to September 1985 reveal for the parliamentary constituency of Glanford and Scunthorpe.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following information is in the Library.

The numbers of unemployed claimants in the Glanford and Scunthorpe parliamentary constituency are as follows:

Number
September 1983* 7,701
September 1984 7,586
September 1985 7,012
*provisional.

Unemployment rates are not calculated for areas smaller than travel-to-work areas.

Between September 1983 and September 1985 unemployment in the area fell by 689 or 8.9 per cent. Between June 1983 and October 1985 unemployment in the area fell by 782 or 10.5 per cent., but this comparison will be affected by seasonal factors.

Mr. Hickmet

asked the Paymaster General what special employment measures are available in the Glanford and Scunthorpe parliamentary constituency.

Mr. Alan Clark

The current ranges of employment measures are all available to people living in the Glanford and Scunthorpe constituency:

  • Community Industry
  • Community Programme
  • Enterprise Allowance Scheme
  • Job Release Scheme
  • Job Splitting Scheme
  • Part-Time Job Release Scheme
  • Voluntary Projects Programme
  • Young Workers Scheme

Mr. Hickmet

asked the Paymaster General how many new jobs have been created in the Glanford and Scunthorpe constituency since June 1983.

Mr. Alan Clark

Information about job gains and job losses is not available from the Department's statistics. Net changes in employment can be given, but, for areas smaller than regions, only for those dates when censuses of employment are taken.

The latest available information is from the June 1978 and the following September 1981 censuses of employment. In that period the number of employees employed in the area covered by the jobcentre areas of Scunthorpe and Gainsborough, of which the Glanford and Scunthorpe constituency forms part, fell by just over 17,000. More up-to-date employment figures will become available following the publication of the 1984 census of employment in the spring of 1986. A September 1984 inquiry confined to employment in the Scunthorpe and Glanford enterprise zones showed a net increase of 160 employees since dates of designation in September 1983 and spring of 1984 respectively.
