HC Deb 02 December 1985 vol 88 cc98-9W
Mr. Arnold

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the responsibilities of each of the deputy secretaries in his Department and the numbers and ranks of staff reporting to each.

Mr. Jopling

Information on the five grade 2 posts, which include deputy secretary appointments, in my Department and the number of staff reporting to them on 1 April 1985 is as follows:

Post Number of Staff
Deputy Secretary (Agricultural Commodities) 259
Deputy Secretary (Land and Resources) 3,250½
Deputy Secretary (Fisheries and Food) 1,027½
Legal Advisor and Solicitor 53½
Director General (Agricultural Development & Advisory Service) 5,176
Details of their responsibilities are set out in the Civil Service Year Book 1985 which is available in the Library of the House.

There are about 200 grades in my Department and a breakdown of staff in each grade by grade 2 commands is not readily available. There are 25 grade 3 posts. For grades 4 in the open structure and below, the numbers by grade are given in Her Majesty's Treasury's publication "Staff in Post: Civil Service: Non-Industrial Staff: Departmental Tables by Sex: Grade by Department Analysis on 1 April 1985", a copy of which is also available in the Library of the House. Similar details are not available for industrial staff of which there were 668 on 1 April 1985, mainly in the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service.
