HC Deb 02 December 1985 vol 88 cc33-4W
Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list those paragraphs of the conclusions of the United Nations Nairobi conference on forward looking strategies for the advancement of women which Her Majesty's Government have already implemented.

Mr. Waddington

I shall write to the hon. Member.

Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what steps he is taking to ensure that by the year 2000, Her Majesty's Government have comprehensive policies for the implementation of paragraph 78 of the conclusion of the United Nations Nairobi conference on forward looking strategies for the advancement of women, relating to the full and equal participation of women in society;

(2) what steps Her Majesty's Government are taking to seek to implement paragraph 77 of the conclusion of the Nairobi conference on forward looking strategies for the advancement of women relating to the removal of discriminatory attitudes and practices.

Mr. Waddington

The Government are committed to the elimination of sex discrimination by all appropriate means. These will include sensible and effective enforcement of the relevant legislation and support for the Equal Opportunities Commission in the pursuit of its statutory duties to work towards the elimination of discrimination, to promote equality of opportunity between men and women generally and to keep under review the working of the Sex Discrimination and Equal Pay Acts.

Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has as to the action which the Equal Opportunities Commission proposes to take in pursuance of the aims of the United Nations Nairobi conference on forward looking strategies for the advancement of women; and what funds will be made available for this purpose.

Mr. Waddington

It is for the Equal Opportunities Commission to determine how best to discharge its statutory duties under the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 within the resources available to the commission.

Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how often he has met the Equal Opportunities Commission to discuss the implementation of the United Nations Nairobi conference on forward looking strategies for the advancement of women; and what future plans he has for such meetings.

Mr. Waddington

My right hon. Friend last met the chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission in London on 28 October and he intends to visit the commission in Manchester early in 1986. As is usual in the case of meetings with the commission he expects that they shall be discussing a wide range of matters of common concern.

Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will set up an inter-departmental working group to discuss and plan the implementation of the United Nations Nairobi conference on forward looking strategies for the advancement of women.

Mr. Waddington

We have at present no plans to do so.

Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has for implementing paragraph 58 of the United Nations Nairobi conference on forward looking strategies for the advancement of women, in relation to the collection of statistics on the situation of women.

Mr. Waddington

I refer the hon. Member to the reply given to a question by the hon. Member for Walthamstow (Mr. Deakins) on 29 November 1985 at column696.
