§ Mr. Adleyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment he has made of the additional number of people who will be enfranchised to vote at the next general election in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Bill's proposals for holidaymakers; and when he expects to lay the relevant statutory instrument.
§ Mr. MellorThe number will depend on when the election is called, but the Government's White Paper on the "Representation of the People Acts" (Cmnd. 9140, paragraph 3.7) pointed out that well over a million people may be away on holiday on any particular day of May or 79W June. It is our intention to bring the new arrangements for holidaymakers and others to vote by post or proxy into operation by February 1987.
