§ Mr. Irvingasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what offences were committed by the inmates of Durham H wing; what are the corresponding sentences; and if he is satisfied that all such offences warrant maximum security confinement.
§ Mr. MellorThe table shows the offences and corresponding sentences for the 35 inmates who were in Durham H wing on 18 April. Allocation to the wing takes account of the nature of the offence, the length of sentence and behaviour in custody, as well as the availability of accommodation for female prisoners. We are satisfied that in the case of those who are presently in H wing these factors have been fully taken into account. Most will be able to move on to less secure conditions in due course.
