§ Ms. Harmanasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the latest available data on personal social services gross current expenditure, including joint finance, in similar form to that provided in 1984 to the Social Services Committee and published on page 14 of HC 395; and if he will publish a similar table showing (a) net current expenditure in constant prices, (b) gross unit costs, (c) net unit costs and (d) activity levels.
§ Mr. John Patten[pursuant to his reply, 26 March 1985, c. 164]: The information requested on personal social services expenditure, unit costs and activity levels is given in the tables. In line with the Department's submission to the Social Services Committee in 1984, the expenditure and unit cost figures are expressed in in-put volume terms (that is after allowing for personal social services pay and price movements). Additionally, tables on personal social services net and gross current expenditure are also given in economic cost terms to provide a more complete picture of expenditure trends.
The figures are derived using the Department's programme budget methodology as described in last year's submission to the Social Services Committee and published in its fourth report (HC 395). These estimates of expenditure are valid for monitoring broad trends but not for making close comparisons between programmes.
