§ Mr. Madelasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many teachers local education authorities in England employed in January; and what is his estimate of the pupil to teacher ratio.
§ Sir Keith JosephIn January 1985 local education authorities in England employed the full-time equivalent of 405,300 teachers for service in nursery, primary and secondary schools. On the basis of estimated pupil numbers I would expect the overall ratio of pupils to teachers to lie between 17.7:1 and 17.8:1; this represents a continuation of the improvements achieved in recent years.
