§ Sir David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a further progress report upon famine relief in Ethiopia and the Sudan with special reference to the British and European Economic Community contributions, respectively.
§ Mr. RaisonIn Ethiopia and the Sudan millions of people are still at risk. Food and other relief supplies are getting through but distribution and other problems remain. The lates FAO calculations are that in each case pledges of food aid to Ethiopia and the Sudan for 1985 total more than 1 million tonnes, but about 300,000 tonnes for each is still needed. The European Community and its member states are committed to deliver at least 170,000 tonnes of grain to each country during 1985, In addition, the Community is providing cash grants amounting to about £25 million for Ethiopia and £11.6 million for Sudan, mainly for food purchases. This year Britain is providing 10,000 tonnes of wheat to Ethiopia and 50,000 tonnes to Sudan as part of our national contribution to the Community total.
