HC Deb 01 April 1985 vol 76 c453W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what information he has to the number of pupils, over the age of 11 plus, not being educated in comprehensive schools, bilingual and otherwise, in each of the local education authorities in Wales; and how many are in schools providing special education commensurate with the pupils' physical and mental state.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

The total numbers of pupils aged 11 years and over as at 31 August 1983 in schools outside the comprehensive sector in Wales at January 1984 are as follows:

Number of Pupils*
Clwyd 3,140
Dyfed 4,535
Gwent 1,660
Gwynedd 1,072
Mid Glamorgan 932
Powys 649
South Glamorgan 2,058

* Pupils aged 11 years and over at primary schools, secondary modem schools, secondary grammar schools, other non-comprehensive secondary schools, special schools and independent schools.

The total numbers of pupils, by age, receiving special education at primary and secondary schools, special schools or units and at independent and non-maintained schools is not collected centrally. Some details of pupils receiving special education are, however, available in "Statistics of Education in Wales" a copy of which is in the Library.
