HC Deb 01 April 1985 vol 76 c462W
Mr. Rowlands

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is his latest estimate of the amount of coking coal imported into the United Kingdom; from where and at what average price; and what effect the dollar-sterling exchange rate has had upon the price.

Mr. David Hunt

In January 1985, the last month for which figures are available, nearly 700,000 tonnes of coking coal were imported into the United Kingdom, mainly from suppliers in the USA and Australia, at an average value of around £49 per tonne. The general strengthening of the US dollar against other currencies put downward pressure on dollar prices as well as increasing the sterling price for any given dollar price.
