HC Deb 01 April 1985 vol 76 c502W
Sir Peter Emery

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will take steps to arrange for information on the total amount of value added tax paid by charitable organisations to be collected.

Mr. Hayhoe

As most of the value added tax paid by charities arises on their purchases of taxable goods and services, information about the total amount of tax borne by charities is not available from existing official records and could only be collected at disproportionate cost which I do not consider justified. The collection of such information would also place a heavy and undesirable administrative burden on the charities themselves.
