HC Deb 31 October 1984 vol 65 cc1108-9W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what powers he has to ensure that London Regional Transport takes into account the interests of local residents when dealing with the problems of commuter parking round tube stations.

Mrs. Chalker

The Secretary of State has no specific powers to direct London Regional Transport over the provision of parking facilities for commuters.

Schedule 2 to the London Regional Transport Act empowers London Regional Transport to provide parking facilities at or near tube stations; the extent to which it does is dependent upon the availability of suitable land as well as its commercial judgment.

In the objectives that he has set for London Regional Transport the Secretary of State has asked it to bring forward, as rapidly as possible, a programme to improve interchanges between different forms of public and private transport.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has about controlled parking schemes around London tube stations designed to discourage commuter parking in residential streets.

Mrs. Chalker

The responsibility for such schemes, and information about them, rests with the Greater London council.
