Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in how many cases the United Kingdom has introduced new quotas on textiles and clothing in 1983 and the first half of 1984 by means of the basket-extractor mechanism; what supplier countries were involved; what levels of quotas were fixed; and what were the trigger levels which led to the opening of negotiations to set these quotas.

During 1983 and the first half of 1984 the European Community has negotiated 16 new quotas covering the United Kingdom market under the basket extraction provisions of the Community's bilateral agreements under the multi-fibre arrangement and associated arrangements. The details are as follows:

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what was the percentage share of United Kingdom textile and clothing exports taken by (a) developing countries, (b) the EEC and (c) other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries in each of the past five years;

(2) what was the percentage share of the United Kingdom market for textiles and clothing taken by imports from (a) developing countries, (b) the European Economic Community and (c) other Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development countries in each of the past five years.
