HC Deb 31 October 1984 vol 65 cc1058-9W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the shortage of renal dialysis facilities at Edinburgh hospitals.

Mr. John MacKay

I welcome the increase in renal transplants in Edinburgh over recent years. Suitable donor kidneys still are fewer than the patients who could benefit from transplants, and as a result cumulative demand for dialysis continues to grow. In Edinburgh the hospital-based and home dialysis services have increasing numbers of patients. The decision on the overall level of resources for this purpose is for Lothian health board.
