Mr. Cohen

asked the Attorney-General (1) if Her Majesty's Government will reject any proposals to reform the legal aid system which would extend applicability beyond the needs of the applicant to the likely expenditure involved in the litigation; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if Her Majesty's Government will reject any proposals to reform the legal aid system which would give an advantage in the use of the legal system to people who had taken out insurance against legal costs; and if he will make a statement;

(3) if he will reject any proposals to reform the legal aid system which would require recipients to pay a commercial or economic rate; and if he will make a statement.

I assume the hon. Member is referring to the recent remarks of the Master of the Rolls. I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave on 24 October, at column 595, to the hon. Member for Liverpool, West Derby (Mr. Wareing).
