§ Mr. Freeman
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, for the last 12 months for which statistics are available, how many immigrants from the Republic of Vietnam were accepted for settlement in the United Kingdom specifying (a) the total number and (b) those who were spouses or minor children of immigrants already settled.

There were also on 31 August 1984 about 9,300 untried or convicted unsentenced or non-criminal prisoners in prison department establishments all of whom had been in custody less than five years since their initial committal.

§ Mr. Kilroy-Silk
asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of people in prison per 100,000 population in each country in the European Economic Community.

§ Mr. Mellor
Such ratios are now published twice a year by the Council of Europe in thePrison Information Bulletin, copies of which are held in the Library of the House. The most recent information appears in table 1 of the issue published in June 1984. However, the information for different countries is not comparable because the definitions of prisons and prisoners vary between countries and such differences may have a substantial effect on the comparisons.
