What is the total amount of public funds received by the United Kingdom coal mining industry in the 10 years ending 30th June 1984, and how much is this per tonne produced.

Total expenditure on deficit and operating grants to the NCB, social grants, pneumoconiosis compensation grants and the Redundant Mineworkers Payments Scheme in the 10 years from 1st July 1974 to 30th June 1984 was £3.5 billion. This is equivalent to £2.96 per tonne of coal produced in this period. The figures on which this total is based are set out in the table below:
