HL Deb 30 October 1984 vol 456 c508WA
Baroness Burton of Coventry

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list those industries where there is a statutory requirement to consult consumer interests before changes in tariffs are implemented; those where non-statutory arrangements for consultation exist; and those which have no arrangements.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Lucas of Chilworth)

The nationalised industries which have a statutory requirement to consult consumer councils before changes in tariffs are implemented are:

  • The British Gas Corporation,
  • The Electricity Supply Industry.
  • The Post Office.

It is the practice of the National Coal Board to advise the Domestic Coal Consumers' Council of tariff changes. Informal arrangements exist whereby British Rail consult the transport consumer councils on fares and charges.
