HL Deb 30 October 1984 vol 456 c509WA
Viscount Hanworth

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that they can prevent the import and sale of dangerous goods, particularly the Rinko pool filter and similar dangerous models.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth

The Government are not wholly satisfied with the existing means of preventing the import of dangerous goods. As a result, the White Paper on theSafety of Goods (Cmnd. 9302) was published in July and if the proposals in the White Paper are accepted it should be easier to deal with imports of such goods.

The trading standards departments of local authorities are responsible for enforcing safety legislation and have prosecuted the importers of the Rinko filters. The filters have been removed from sale. Wide publicity has been given to the dangers of these filters in both the national and local press.
