Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was the establishment, by grades, numbers and totals for the Home Office division dealing with civil defence and home defence for the years 1973–74 to 1984–85 inclusive; and what are the figures for 1985–86;

(2) how many staff were in post by grades, numbers and totals for the Home Office division dealing with civil defence and home defence for the years 1973–74 to 1984–85 inclusive at 1 January each year;

(3) how many assistant secretaries have been in charge of the Home Office division dealing with civil defence and home defence since the beginning of the financial year 1973–74 and for which periods.

The information requested is as follows.

There have been four assistant secretaries in charge of civil defence since 1973–74, the first serving to June 1977, the second to December 1979, the third to September 1984 and the current post holder. Complements for the financial years and staff-in-post figures for 1 January are as follows:
