HC Deb 29 October 1984 vol 65 cc819-20W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards proposals to abolish vehicle excise duty and replace it with a tax on petrol.

Mr. Hayhoe

The Government have no present plans to abolish vehicle excise duty and replace it with increased taxation of petrol, but the possibility is kept under regular review. The Government are currently considering the recommendations contained in the recent Public Accounts Committee report criticising the current levels of evasion of vehicle excise duty.
