§ Mr. Wareingasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many United Kingdom nationals have died abroad during each of the last 10 years; how many were buried or cremated (a) abroad and (b) at home; and what was the cost in each year for transporting bodies home.
§ Mr. RifkindThere is no obligation for British citizens overseas to register with British high commissions, Her Majesty's embassies or consulates, nor is there a requirement for their deaths to be notified to these offices. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has therefore no record of the number of British citizens who have died abroad during the last 10 years, nor of how many were buried or cremated abroad and at home.
