HC Deb 29 October 1984 vol 65 c829W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what capital allocations for the provision of regional secure psychiatric units have been made to regions that have not yet begun to build.

Mr. John Patten

Three regional health authorities—South West Thames, Oxford and West Midlands—have not yet begun capital works on permanent secure psychiatric units. No capital allocations for this purpose have therefore been made to them apart from West Midlands, who propose to start work on a 100 bed unit in the current financial year and were allocated £303,000 in 1983–84 of which £6,000 was spent on preliminary work. The underspend is taken into account in allocations for 1984–85.

South West Thames and Oxford RHAs are actively planning permanent secure units. Our officials are in close touch with officers of the two Regions and are expecting to receive detailed submissions on the two capital schemes shortly.
