asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make the fitment of Denlock rims or similar safety wheels mandatory on new cars.

I understand that this device prevents detachments of the tyre from the rim as may occur with a puncture. Developments in tyre technology have reduced the incidence of punctures which 10 years ago were found to be a factor in only 1 per cent. of accidents. It is therefore unlikely that a mandatory requirement for a device of this kind would be economically justified.
