HC Deb 29 October 1984 vol 65 c815W
Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance his Department has provided to Mr. David Gottfreid, a 17-year-old British citizen whose trial on a charge of murder is due to open in Miami, Florida on 5 November.

Mr. Rifkind

Representatives from our consulate-general in Atlanta have visited Mr. Gottfreid in prison on four occasions. They have maintained contact with his lawyer and made representations to the prison authorities when he has complained about his conditions of detention. His lawyer has also discussed the case in London with the head of our consular department.

Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations his Department have made to the appropriate United States authorities about the fact that a 17-year-old British citizen, Mr. David Gottfreid, is now threatened with the death penalty by the prosecution in Miami, Florida.

Mr. Rifkind

None. However, the possibility of representations at any appropriate moment will be borne in mind.
