asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has any plans to impose value added tax on certain foodstuffs; and if he will make a statement.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he has any plans to levy value added tax on passenger transport fares; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he has any plans to levy value added tax on books and journals; and if he will make a statement.

[pursuant to his reply, 24 October 1984, c. 604]: Although the Government are committed to a shift in the burden of taxation from taxes on earnings to taxes on spending, we have no set views at present on how this might best be done.
