Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if he will publish a table showing the cost of teachers' salaries as a proportion of total expenditure on education, each year since 1979 to the latest convenient date;

(2) if he will publish a table showing the cost of teachers' salaries, and the percentage increase, each year since 1979 to the latest convenient date.

The expenditure since 1979 by local education authorities in England on the salaries of school teachers as a proportion of their total net expenditure on schools, and the yearly percentage increases in salaries are as follows:
