HC Deb 25 October 1984 vol 65 cc717-8W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the effect of National Health Service provision following his decision that health authorities had to find the extra £36 million to accommodate the pay settlement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Government have increased authorities' cash limits to cover 80 per cent. of the additional cost of the pay settlement. The remaining costs to health authorities in England should be met from savings produced by health authorities' own proposals for cost improvements through greater efficiency and better productivity, which amount to some £100 million at least.
