§ 43. Mrs. Clwydasked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will assess the effects on the environment of a nuclear exchange and publish details of his assessment.
§ Mr. StanleyThe fundamental objective of the Government's defence policy, based on the strategy of deterrence, is to continue to ensure that neither nuclear nor conventional war occurs. The effects of any war, nuclear or conventional, would be appalling. The international scientific community is currently examining the possible environmental effects of a nuclear war, and the Government are following this work closely.
