§ Mr. Kenneth Clarke[pursuant to his reply, 23 October 1984, c. 572]: We collect statistics for patients treated under contractual arrangements with institutions outside the NHS separately from those treated in NHS hospitals. The relevant figures are given in the table. Acute treatment for this purpose covers all specialties with the exception of convalescent, geriatric, maternity, mental illness, mental handicap and severe mental handicap.
