HC Deb 23 October 1984 vol 65 c565W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total spend on social security each year since 1960 both in current price terms and at 1984 prices; and what were each of these totals as a percentage of total Government spend and of gross domestic product for each of these years.

Mr. Whitney

The figures in the table are derived from the 1984 National Income and Expenditure "Blue Book" for the years 1973–1983; from the 1973 Blue Book for the years 1962–1972 and from the 1971 Blue book for the first two years. The first two columns relate to expenditure in the United Kingdom on social security benefits as defined for the respective Blue Books; the conversion to constant prices has been made using the retail price index.
