Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will in future inform local authorities of accidents at military bases which may affect the health and safety of local inhabitants.

Mr. Stanley

It is our normal practice to inform local authorities should there be a potential risk to the health and safety of local people as a result of an accident. The minor incident at the Clyde submarine base on 18 August constituted no such risk.
