HC Deb 23 October 1984 vol 65 cc551-2W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his recent visit to Liverpool.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

I visited Merseyside on 19 October 1984.

In the morning, I visited housing sites in Liverpool, I met the vice-chairman of Merseyside Improved Houses and I opened one of its new developments. I presented keys to some of the new tenants and planted a tree to commemorate the occasion.

Then I visited the Shell oil refinery at Stanlow where I opened the new platformer III plant. This is a £50 million development designed to reduce the lead level in petrol to comply with the new standard announced by the Government to take effect from 1 January 1986.

In the afternoon, I had a discussion with the officials of Merseyside task force before going to meet the vice-chancellor of the University of Liverpool, and other members of the senior acedemic and administrative staff.
