asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans there are for the construction of a separate computer department for the efficient exploitation of information technology in the Civil Service.

Central department responsibilities in this area are discharged by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency, part of Treasury. Responsibility for identifying, implementing and managing the application of information technology in Government Departments rests with individual Departments.
