HC Deb 22 October 1984 vol 65 c440W
Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of sentenced persons between the ages of 17 and 21 years being held in (a) adult prisons and (b) adult remand prisons during the week beginning 4 June.

Mr. Giles Shaw

[pursuant to the reply, 14 June 1984]: The latest available information is given in the following table. It is normal for young males to be kept apart from adult males whereas in establishments for females, women and girls may mix.

Sentenced persons aged 17 and under 21 held in adult prisons in England and Wales on 30 April 1984.
Estimated number*
Adult prisons with remand units/wings for prisoners aged under 21 470
Remand centres taking remand prisoners of all ages 120
Other adult prisons 580
* The figures are those recorded centrally and are approximate: detailed checking of individual cases would involve disproportionate cost.
